My eyes fluttered open and I quickly looked around my surroundings to gather my bearings. It took me several moments to clear the fog that lingered in my mind. Damn that potion was some powerful stuff. As soon as I was back to firing on all cylinders, I frantically searched the room for signs of Allegra.
I was in some sort of cell and it was dark and damp. We must be underground. There was a small sink and toilet in one corner of the room and a simple cot on the other. Stone walls surrounded me, dark and grey, looking like they would close in at any moment. My lip curled at the stench in the air. It was stale and there was something rotten about it. Where was Allegra?
There she was, lying in the fetal position on the cot. She was unmoving, and for a split second my heart stuttered in my chest as I thought of something happening to her. I may not know her fully yet, but she was my mate and I would die if anything happened to her.
I looked down at my body, still clad in just my sports shorts, but I was solid, not in my astral form. This must have been what happened to Allegra the first time she visited me. My bare feet carried me across the cell, and I winced at the chill that seeped into my body from their contact on the cold floor.
I collapsed to my knees beside her, my hands hovering above her body as I said a small prayer to the Goddess, hoping that she was unharmed. When I saw her chest rise and fall in a steady movement, I let out the breath that I didn't realize I was holding.
"Allegra," I whispered, my fingers brushing her blonde hair from her face. There was dried blood caked in the back of her head and I winced at the memory of the phantom blow. "Please wake up."
Her eyes moved behind her lids and her fingers twitched from where she clutched tightly to her legs. She wanted to wake up, but her body was still trying to heal from the crippling blow that took her down.
My eyes darted around the small cell, taking in every single detail so that I could make sure I could get her out safely. The front end of the cell was secure with thick iron bars, a standard door with a keyhole littering the center of it. The other sides of the room were dark, gray stone. No windows or ways in or out other than the cell door.
Shit. How was I going to get her out of here? Would Elena's concoction really work? She implied it might bring both of us back. Hopefully, she was right.
I ran the back of my knuckles down the bare skin of her arms and watched in fascination as goosebumps pebbled along her flesh. "Allegra, please, baby. Show me those beautiful emerald eyes." Where had these words come from? I was a man of few words and I didn't give people pet names like baby.
